The EAN (European Article Number) barcode is a globally recognized numeric barcode system used primarily in retail and product identification.

Developed in 1977 as an extension of the UPC (Universal Product Code), EAN barcodes are standardized by GS1 and used worldwide for scanning items at points of sale.

 

There are different barcode modes implemented corresponding to the type EAN:
